FOLLOWING yesterday's tragic turn of events at the Melbourne Cup, the Jimboomba Times took to the streets to ask readers their thoughts on the horse racing industry.
Japanese favourite Admire Rakti died from a heart attack shortly after the race's conclusion yesterday, while stayer Araldo was put down after breaking his leg.
The German-bred horse broke his leg stumbling into a barricade when spooked by a flag waved near his face after the race.
The Times asked readers whether there should be more regulations in the horse racing industry to protect animals, especially in the area of crowd control.
Many believed there was little that could have been done to prevent the deaths of the animals.
"I don't think the horse racing industry should be touched, this sort of thing is going to happen."
"Everything is about money so it is tough, but there should be better controls in the industry."
"There should definitely be more controls, especially with the horses being put under pressure."
"I'm a horse person myself but I don't think a lot can be done."
"It doesn't matter what sport it is, there are going to be deaths and injuries. It is very sad though, they shouldn't force the horses to work like they do."
"They probably overwork the horses but these things happen."
