IT is alleged a stolen car dumped and set alight in the pine forest near Yarrabilba was the cause of Wednesday's bushfire in the region.
Jimboomba Police Senior Sergeant Bill Sheehan said police were investigating the claim, but it was "likely" to be true.
Senior Sergeant Sheehan said the dumping and burning of stolen cars posed a real threat to the community, especially during bushfire season.
"It has always been a real concern of mine that this could happen," he said.
Senior Sergeant Sheehan reminded residents that police were cracking down on tresspassers in the pine forest, saying such activity would not be tolerated.
EARLIER: FIREFIGHTERS are battling a large bushfire in the pine forest near Yarrabilba.
It is believed the blaze, which is burning near Plunkett Road, started in a car about 10.30am this morning.
Firefighters from the Jimboomba Chambers Flat, Logan Village and Tamborine Rural Fire Brigades are on the scene.
Backburning operations are being conducted to control the blaze.
Large amounts of smoke are coming from the bushfire and motorists are advised to drive carefully through the area.
Residents near Yarrabilba should keep doors and windows shut and call triple-0 immediately if they feel their home is under threat.
The fire is not threatening any property at this stage.
