BROWNS Plains man Thomas Mackuy has been "thrown in the deep end" at Able Australia's Caddies centre but is looking forward to learning how to swim.
Mr Mackuy has joined the Caddies Youth Support (CYS) team in Jimboomba, where he will spend the next six months working with local teens.
Currently studying a Diploma of Community Services, Mr Mackuy said he was looking forward to testing his skills in youth work.
"It's a really good course I've done over the past few months and I think it has changed my way of thinking," Mr Mackuy said.
"Previous to this I've always been a maths guy and working in IT, so this is a bit of a change to see where it takes me.
"It will be great to get some experience working with a wide range of youth, including those with disabilities.
"I think it's good to help other people, it's early days (in this line of work) for me but I'm committed to seeing where it might go."
Mr Mackuy spent Tuesday with youth from Caddies at Sky Zone in Macgregor as part of a special school holidays excursion.
He said it was a great way to begin his Caddies experience.
"The kids loved it, it was a great day out," he said.
Caddies Youth Support team leader Petrea Sexton said she was thrilled to have Tom on board.
She said CYS was "evolving" and the extra help was invaluable.
"At this point in time we are really stepping up to get new programs out there," Ms Sexton said.
"We are doing sign language programs, we are visiting schools and we are trying to bring in more indigenous youth because we want to be able to say to all kids look, come and we want to be able to be fully inclusive."
"You need to have well founded programs and with some new initiatives we are moving in that direction, instead of being a babysitting service, which is where we did not want to be.
"Then we get students like Thomas coming along, which is a fantastic help, I am not going to want to let him go!"
An open day is planned for the CYS service in February next year.
