GREENBANK woman Fiona Murray will lead a team of eager locals in Brisbane's first Big Red Kidney Walk this weekend.
The walk will raise awareness and funds for kidney related illnesses, from which 1.7 million Australians suffer every year.
Ms Murray's struggle with kidney disease was featured in the Jimboomba Times in June.
Eight months on from her kidney transplant, she is going from strength to strength.
But despite her newfound energy, she is always aware of people going through renal failure.
"I've been in to the renal unit at Logan Hospital to talk to people in there a few times," she said.
"They just have no energy or strength. It's really sad and I find it hard to cope with, because I'm always energetic.
"It's why this walk is so important."
Ms Murray said the walk would be a "huge boost" for sufferers and their families.
"The walk is a fun day for the kidney patients and their families, as well as to raise awareness for kidney health in a relaxed atmosphere," she said.
"A lot of patients won't be able to walk because they just won't have the energy, but it's a day for their families to walk in their honour too."
Ms Murray is hoping to organise a Big Red Kindey Walk for Logan in 2015.
"It would be fantastic to have an event somewhere like the Berrinba Wetlands, or in one of the city's big parks," she said.
"I will be approaching council about organising something, especially to support renal patients in Logan.
"Logan is a multicultural city with people from lots of different backgrounds who might not be aware of kidney disease.
"It is so important to get the word out because 90 per cent of kidney function can be lost without any symptoms."
The Brisbane walk will begin at 10am on Hill End Terrace in West End on Sunday, September 14.
Registration is $10 per person or $50 for a group of 10.
