TWO shocking cases of animal cruelty in which a magpie and two kangaroos were shot with arrows at Jimboomba have prompted a call for information from the RSPCA.
The animal rescue service is seeking any information on people seen with arrows near Drover Crescent , Jimboomba recently.
A distraught Jimboomba resident contacted the animal rescue service last weekend after finding the injured magpie in their yard.
The bird, which was impaled with a large arrow through its left quadricep muscle, was found about 9am on Sunday, September 7.
It was taken back to the RSPCA centre at Wacol, where it was treated by wildlife vet Dr Monique Tydens. Dr Tydens removed the arrow, but the magpie died.
The same Jimboomba resident had contacted the RSPCA just weeks before, after discovering two kangaroos and a joey in bushland behind Drover Crescent.
The animals, which were dead when found, had been strung up in trees.
They had each been shot with the same brand of arrow that killed the magpie, an Easton Power flight carbon arrow that was black, orange and yellow in colour.
RSPCA spokesman Michael Beatty said the arrows were sold widely and it was impossible to trace where they may have been bought.
He said it was disturbing to think someone was hunting animals for sport in the Jimboomba area.
"It is too much of a coincidence the animals have been found in the same spot, somebody must know something and might come forward," Mr Beatty said.
"Unfortunately in these cases they tend to often be kids mucking around, but its hard to pinpoint."
Mr Beatty said such cases of animal cruelty had cropped up recently, especially in light of popular movies and television shows featuring bows and arrows.
"There has been a spike in (cases like this) over the last year and a bit when the original Hunger Games (movie) came out and there seems to be a spike now with the Walking Dead (TV series) being popular," he said.
Mr Beatty said it was hard to see animals suffering for no good reason.
"I've yet to see an animal cleanly killed with an arrow, some kangaroos can hop around for days with an arrow sticking out of them and they are in so much pain," he said.
Mr Beatty said anyone with information should phone 1300 ANIMAL.
The incidents were reported to police.
