PARK Ridge Pirates under 15s player Courteney Bromage won the best and fairest medal at the AFL Brisbane Juniors Gala Awards night recently.
The 15-year-old said she was honoured to receive the medal, which she won by polling the highest number of best and fairest umpire votes from more than 110 other players in the under 15s.
"I missed out on winning the award last year and I wasn't expecting to win it this year, so I was really shocked when my name was read out," Courteney said.
"The girls I was up against are good players so I knew it was going to be tough.
"To win the medal means I didn't play dirty or back chat the umpires. I also had the ball a lot as I play centre, which means wherever the ball is I have to be."
Courteney's mum, Michelle, said she and husband Chris were proud of their daughter for winning the best and fairest medal.
"She always gives 110 per cent in every game and it is great to see that effort recognised," she said.
"I know the club is very proud of her too."
Courteney said she could not have won the medal without the help of her coach Leeonie Lang and her parents.
"For me being captain of the under 15s girls team I hope receiving the best and fairest medal will show the other girls that they can also have a chance at getting the award," she said.
