TWO local BMX riders have ridden to third place at the 2014 BMX World Championships in the Netherlands.
New Beith's Molly McGill placed third in the 13 years girls division while Jesse Asmus of Chambers Flat placed third in the 11 years boys division at the recent competition in Rotterdam.
Both have fulfilled their goal of placing in the top three of their age group, with Molly up against 52 other riders and Jesse pitching his riding skills against 124 competitors.
Jesse, who claimed the world number one title at last year's BMX works championships in New Zealand, said although he did not win this year he was excited to come third out of so many top riders.
"In the final race I had a bad start and was in the middle of the pack but luckily I had the inside so I could move up on a few people," Jesse said.
"I came out of the first corner in third and stayed in that position for the rest of the race, only missing out on second place by a few centimetres."
Molly moved up the BMX world ranking one place by coming third at this year's world titles, an achievement her father David said she was very happy with.
"Molly came out of the first corner in fourth in the finals race and then worked her way up to third and held onto it, which was hard because there were girls right behind her," Mr McGill said.
"She put in a lot of training in the lead up to the competition, about five or six days a week, and worked hard to earn her spot on the podium."
Both Jesse and Molly are now training for the BMX Queensland State Championships at Chandler in late September.
