PARTICIPATION and interest in sports at Park Ridge State High School has gone from strength to strength this year thanks to the school’s sports leadership team.
The dedicated group of 20 year 11 and 12 students have worked hard to promote sports within the school and organised its biggest carnivals – swimming, cross country and athletics.
They also promote the school’s sporting successes at assemblies and participate in sporting activities with the junior students to encourage participation.
Sports captains Moana Taukamo and Jonah Martin said one of the group’s biggest responsibilities was organising interschool sports each week, which meant making sure the school’s coaches had sports uniforms and equipment ready to use with their classes for many different sports.
“We start school at 8am on a Wednesday to organise the interschool sports and we work well as a team to get it finished on time,” Jonah said.
“I think we have achieved quite a lot at the school over the year, especially with the junior students where we have encouraged them to play a sport and once they have started they love it, even if they have never played before,” Moana said.
Sports co-ordinator Derek Berry said this was the first year the school had developed such a structured sports leadership group and it had been very successful.
“We felt this group of students could really make a positive difference in the school and I think they have,” Mr Berry said.
“They handle their responsibilities well and are able to motivate their peers to play sport and for that the whole school is very proud of them.”
