MORE than 40 people were fined during a joint operation in Plunkett Conservation Park near Yarrabilba.
Jimboomba police, working in conjunction with National Parks rangers and the Forest Hill stock squad, conducted a two-day blitz in the park focussing on illegal trail bike riding last Saturday and Sunday.
Twenty-two fines were issued on Saturday, with a further 19 on Sunday.
Jimboomba Police Senior Sergeant Bill Sheehan said it was illegal to operate motor vehicles, including trail bikes and four-wheel drives, in a conservation park.
"There's some very sensitive flora and fauna in that park (Plunkett) that is unique to that area, so the illegal riding in this area is destroying that flora, which is a huge impact on the environment," he said.
While trail bikes and 4WD vehicles are prohibited in conservation parks, horse and bicycle riding as well as walking on designated trails was permitted.
Senior Sergeant Sheehan said police had been given the power to issue on-the-spot fines in conservation parks, with penalties running up to $700 for illegal motor vehicle operation.
