CANTERBURY College's First V girl's basketball team is celebrating after its historic win against arch-rivals John Paul college at the recent The Associated Schools (TAS) Blue Division Basketball Championship.
Canterbury's team, led by co-captains Bridget O'Brien and Kaila Gabriel, secured a 40-30 victory against its Daisy Hill-based rivals.
College head Donna Anderson said the win was a historic achievement for Canterbury.
"This is the first time in the Canterbury College's history this trophy has been won by the college," she said.
"We normally win a few TAS Blue Division premierships each term, however, this is very special as this is the college's first premiership in the firsts' open basketball."
The competition involves nine teams from schools around Queensland and Canterbury sport director David Howells said the college was ecstatic at the team's achievement, which would go down in canterbury sporting folklore.
"This team is a blend of experienced, highly skilled players, along with keen, willing and highly motivated individuals," he said.
"They came together with outstanding team chemistry and belief to play some profound basketball."
Coach Liz Fiveash and teacher Caron Gabriel guided the successful team, which also included players Jannah Felix, Ajiah-Liric Pepe, Rachel Hunt, Ula Motuga, Jessica Bohan and Racquel Proudfoot.
With this historic victory under its belt, the Canterbury team will now explore competing in the State Schools Championships later this year.
"With several talented younger athletes to join this team, we are hopeful of a strong showing at this event," Mr Howells said.
