MOST ratepayers in Logan can expect to pay at least $75 more this financial year after council handed down its 2011/12 Budget this morning.

The $446.9m budget allows for a general rates increase of $32 a year (3.6 per cent) but once waste is factored in, the minimum increase is $75 or around $1.44 per week.

This budget is the first to include council’s new city-wide two-bin system which kicks off on July 4.

In 2011/12, council will spend $158.8m on roads, drainage and engineering services, $27.8m on community infrastructure, $43.1m on parks management and maintenance and $31.9m on waste management.

More than $14m will also be spent on libraries and cultural services, $8m will go towards development assessment and town planning, $7.8m has been set aside for environmental services and $7.5m for animal and pest services.

In handing down the budget, Mayor Pam Parker said the council had listened to the community and kept the rates increase relatively low in a bid to ease the burden on families facing soaring costs of living across the board.

“Today’s budget is a budget that shows that we as a council have listened to you, the community,” she said.

“The people of Logan want quality services for the funds they invest in council and we are determined to provide value for money.

“In spite of the financial challenges we as a council have experienced and continue to face, we willingly acknowledge and accept our responsibility of continuing to deliver our residents a lifestyle they enjoy, and to support our businesses.”
