FOR Jimboomba’s Narelle Jones, the Gold Coast Airport Marathon is more than a run.

Her 28-year-old daughter Rennee Webster had hoped to run in the event but tragically passed away from ovarian cancer earlier this year.

In a bid to keep her memory alive and raise valuable funds for ovarian cancer awareness, Ms Jones has entered the 5km challenge along with almost 50 of Ms Webster’s family and friends.

The group will form ‘Team Rennee’ and will compete the challenge with the ovarian cancer banner. While she fights back tears as she talks about Ms Webster, Mr Jones is determined to do the run her daughter missed out on.

“Rennee was always going to do it, even before she had cancer. Then, when she had the cancer ... she got on the breast cancer site and she noticed the ovarian site was next door,” she said.

“When she went down the list of symptoms she had every one. Then she said to me ‘mum, there’s no awareness for ovarian cancer’.”

Ms Jones said it was Rennee’s passion to create more awareness on the disease.

“She was quite passionate and she said to me ‘I’m going to change this’.” she said.

“It was her wish and I think it’s what keeps us going. We’re doing it for her because it’s something we can give back. We can keep her dream alive and it’s something to look forward to.”

Team Rennee competitors will wear a shirt with a small butterfly logo as well as some eye-stopping blue frilly undies.

“We thought, ‘okay we have to make this thing stick out’, so we went blue undies,” Ms Jones said.

“It’s said that too many young women suffer from undiagnosed ovarian cancer. If symptoms don’t go away do something about it. Don’t brush them off,” she said.

The Gold Coast Airport Marathon is on Sunday, July 3 and will attract more than 25,000 runners from all over Australia and the world
