Jimboomba Times 'Best Newspaper'
13 October 2009
THE Jimboomba Times has been judged Best Newspaper at the 2009 Queensland Country Press Association Awards, held in Brisbane on Saturday night.

The Times took out several awards in the advertising and editorial categories before being chosen as this year’s Best Newspaper with a circulation of more than 10,000.

The newspaper took home the award for Journalistic Excellence: Open, with judges commenting on the high quality of the newspaper’s content.

“Here’s a paper that is constantly evolving editorially to meet the expectations of its readers,” judge Max Tomlinson said.

“The eye-catching front-page photo, clean modular layout, effective use of colour and improved stock combine to make this paper stand out from its competitors.

“The “Community Life” section bristles with succinctly written, bite-sized snippets of local news - a critical element in a successful grass-roots community newspaper.

“The paper’s excellent coverage of local and regional news is complemented by generous space allocated to letters, a four-page TV guide and a strong editorial comment.

“It was difficult to find weaknesses in the paper’s overall commitment to editorial high standards.”

The Times’ successful 15 Steps guide to buying, building and renovating received top place in the Best Locally Produced Advertising Campaign category, with judges remarking it was a simple, effective feature which produced positive results for the publisher, advertisers and readers.

Jimboomba Times editor Brenton Waters received first and third place in the Journalistic Excellence: Individual category for reports on Wyaralong Dam and the Southern Freight Rail Corridor while journalist Jasmine Ward scored third place in the Best News Photo section for her clever picture illustrating silly socks day last year.

The Jimboomba Times’ sister paper, Beaudesert Times, also performed well, taking out the award for Best Newspaper with a circulation under 5000.
